Basilica di San Petronio
📍 From Piazza Maggiore, Italy
The Basilica di San Petronio, located in Bologna, Italy, is one of the most beautiful architectural monuments in the city. Built in the 14th century as a gothic church, it was originally intended to be the largest church in the world, bigger even than St Peter's Basilica in Rome. Although construction was never completed, it remains the largest bricks building in Europe. The Basilica is open to visitors and features a variety of works of art, such as frescoes by Pellegrino Tibaldi, a set of organs from the 16th century and the famous 13th century clock above its main entrance. Inside, you can admire a floor designed by seventeenth century painter Jacopo Pacifici, among other highlights. The facade of the basilica is impressive on its own, beautifully embellished and decorated with statues, sculptures and reliefs. Such an amazing landmark to visit!
