The Basilica di San Petronio is a prominent landmark situated in the heart of Bologna, Italy. Notable for its size and grandeur, this large brown brick church was built between 1390 and 1663 as the city’s main cathedral. It dominates the Piazza Maggiore, which is surrounded by three of Bologna’s beautiful old porticoes including the Palazzo Re Enzo. Inside the basilica, travelers will also find a variety of historic artwork including frescos and sculptures. The Baroque style altar is especially impressive. A visit to the sacristy is also worthwhile, boasting its 14th century fresco. It can be enjoyed for its lavishly decorated walls and ceilings with trompe l’oeil art. The steps leading to the choir are also exquisite.
