The Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano is a celebrated place of Catholic pilgrimage located in the center of Rome. Standing as the oldest of the four papal basilicas, it has been the cathedral of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Rome since the 4th century. Its name is derived from the Laterani family, who once owned the land on which it was built. Today, the basilica features spectacular Baroque elements, including gilded statues, Latin inscriptions, and paintings of Christian scenes. Its three 42 meter tall bell towers and neoclassical façade are particular highlights. Inside the basilica are chapels and six huge Corinthian columns. The most important sculpture in the church is the Statue of St. John the Baptist, and its most well known painting is The Last Judgment by Marcello Venusti. Other famous works include the Monument to Pope Gregorio XVI, by Thorvaldsen, and La Crocerossa by Francesco Podesti.
