The Basilica di San Francesco, in Assisi, Italy, is one of the most important tourist attractions in Italy. The basilica, built in the 13th century, is the main church of the Franciscan order and the place where St. Francis lived, preached, and died. It is beautifully decorated, with intricate frescoes painted by great Italian artists, including Cimabue, Giotto, and Simone Martini. The upper basilica, which is bigger and grander than the lower basilica, is filled with religious iconography reflecting the Franciscan ideals of poverty and humility.
