The Basilica di San Francesco in Assisi, Italy is a popular pilgrimage and tourist destination. It consists of two large churches built in honor of St. Francis and is an important example of medieval Italian architecture and art from the 13th and 14th centuries. The lower basilica, known as the Porziuncola, is the oldest church in the region and was built by St Francis himself in 1210. The upper basilica was built in 1228 and includes the remains of St Francis, as well as numerous frescoes, paintings, and sculptures by some of Italy’s most renowned painters and sculptors.
