The Basilica di San Francesco is an impressive church located in Assisi, Italy. Founded in 1228, it was consecrated in 1253 and built over the remains of an earlier chapel dating from the mid-9th century. It houses the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi and is the most important Catholic pilgrimage site in Italy. This beautiful basilica is filled with stunning frescoes, elegant architecture and ancient artwork from the medieval and Renaissance periods. The main church is divided into two distinct levels – the Lower Church, which was designed by Giotto, and the Upper Church, which is of more Gothic style. The Lower Church has many well-preserved fresco cycles, including Giotto’s famous ‘Legend of St Francis’ with 30 scenes depicting the life of the saint. The Upper Church has a splendid marble pavement and many other significant works of art, including the Maestà by Giunta Pisano. The entire basilica is well worth a visit, giving visitors the opportunity to explore and appreciate the rich history and remarkable artworks it retains.
