📍 From Basílica da Santíssima Trindade, Portugal
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary stands at one end of the Sanctuary of Fátima, overlooking the vast esplanade that serves as the gathering space for pilgrims. Its pale limestone façade, neo-Baroque design and tall central bell tower distinguish it from the modern Basilica of the Holy Trinity across the square. Inside are the tombs of Francisco and Jacinta Marto and Lúcia dos Santos, the three shepherd children associated with the reported Marian apparitions of 1917, which made Fátima a major Catholic pilgrimage centre. Curving colonnades extend to either side of the basilica, giving the ensemble a strongly symmetrical outline. Seen across the open square, the tower and arcades provide an architectural backdrop to the movement of pilgrims, making both the sanctuary’s scale and its continuing religious purpose visible.
