📍 Brazil
The Basílica de Nossa Senhora Aparecida is the centerpiece of Brazil’s national Marian shrine, rising above Aparecida in the Paraíba Valley of São Paulo state. It honors Our Lady of Aparecida, Brazil’s patron saint, whose small terracotta image was recovered by fishermen from the Paraíba do Sul River in 1717. The vast red-brick church combines Romanesque-inspired arches with a blue dome and a prominent bell tower, creating a recognizable silhouette above the pilgrimage complex. Inside, sweeping vaults, mosaics and the niche containing the revered image contrast monumental architecture with a small object of devotion. Broad esplanades reveal the building’s scale, while the Passarela da Fé pedestrian bridge connects the sanctuary to the older basilica in the town center—a visible link between Aparecida’s historic core and its modern religious role. October 12, the patron saint’s feast day, brings especially large gatherings of pilgrims.
