The Basílica de María Santísima de la Esperanza Macarena stands beside the Arco de la Macarena and surviving medieval city walls at the northern edge of Seville’s historic center. Built in the 20th century in a neo-Baroque style, it is home to the Hermandad de la Macarena and its deeply venerated image of the Virgin of Hope, one of the defining figures of Seville’s Holy Week. The brotherhood carries her through the streets during the Madrugá, the night of processions leading into Good Friday. Outside, the basilica’s ochre-and-white façade and elaborate entrance contrast with the neighboring gate’s fortified form. Inside, gilded ornament surrounds the Virgin, whose tearful face and richly embroidered robes express the emotional intensity of Andalusian devotional sculpture.
