The Basilica Cattedrale di Sant'Agata is Gallipoli’s principal cathedral, set on the compact old-town island at the edge of the Gulf of Taranto and anchored among narrow streets and the harborfront. Its richly ornamented Baroque façade and layered interior decoration reflect the Salento taste for stucco and gilded altars, creating strong patterns of light and shadow on capitals and cornices. From the seafront and the Lungomare the cathedral’s bell tower and pale stone massing puncture the low skyline, and evening sun often warms the façades while water offers reflective foregrounds for wide compositions. As an active place of worship, respectful dress and quiet are observed inside.
