The Basilica Cattedrale di Sant'Agata sits at the heart of Catania’s Piazza Duomo as the city’s cathedral and the religious focus for devotion to Saint Agatha, Catania’s patron. Largely rebuilt in the Sicilian Baroque style after the 1693 earthquake, its articulated façade, twin bell towers and alternating bands of dark volcanic stone and lighter marble give the exterior a strong textural contrast that reads well in black-and-white or high-contrast color. Compositions often include the nearby Fontana dell’Elefante and the square’s tiled expanse; on clear days Mount Etna forms a distant backdrop that anchors scale. The interior contains notable tombs and chapels, and the cathedral is an active liturgical site, so modest dress and quiet respect apply during services.
