The Basilica Cateriniana San Domenico is one of the most spectacular Gothic churches in all of Italy. Located in the heart of Siena, it stands as one of the city's many treasured monuments. It was built between 1226 and 1265 to house the remains of St. Catherine, Siena's patron saint. Inside, the basilica features an ornate marble facade, sprawling chapels and an impressive network of frescoes and artwork. The highlight of the interior, however, is its 15th century pulpit, sculpted by the renowned Renaissance artist Giovanni Pisano. The basilica and its grounds are open to the public, with tours taking place daily. Visitors will also find an adjoining, peaceful garden which has the remains of St. Catherine's house. From the basilica's high ceilings and detailed decorations to its plethora of historical relics and artifacts, this is a must-see for visitors to Siena.
