Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada. Completed in 1936 and operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the dam was constructed during The Great Depression, between 1931 and 1936. With a height of 221 m (726 ft) and a length of 379 m (1,244 ft), it is one of the highest dams in the United States, and is one of the 20 largest dams in the world. The Hoover Dam attracts many visitors annually, who come to admire its design, powerplant, and historical significance. Sightseeing areas are available on both the Nevada and Arizona sides where visitors can admire the dam, take pictures, take guided tours and explore the numerous nearby attractions.
