📍 Romania
Vidraru Dam stands near Arefu in Argeș County, where the Transfăgărășan road meets the steep southern reaches of the Carpathians. Completed in 1966, the concrete arch dam spans the Argeș River and forms the long, winding Lake Vidraru, supplying a hydroelectric power station built within the mountain. Its sweeping curved wall, narrow gorge and broad reservoir create a striking contrast between engineered geometry and forested slopes. From the road and nearby viewpoints, photographs can frame the dam’s immense drop, the lake disappearing between ridges, and the Prometheus energy monument overlooking the site.
