📍 United States
Badlands National Park, near Conata in southwestern South Dakota, protects a striking meeting of mixed-grass prairie and deeply eroded sedimentary terrain. Layers deposited by ancient seas, rivers, and floodplains now form jagged buttes, narrow pinnacles, and gullies, with bands of pale gray, cream, yellow, and reddish earth tracing the slopes. The park’s fossil beds preserve evidence of ancient mammals, including rhinoceroses and three-toed horses, revealing a landscape very different from today’s open plains. Low-angle sunlight emphasizes the ridges and cuts deep shadows into the ravines, while wider views reveal abrupt transitions between seemingly level grassland and fractured rock. Bison and prairie dogs inhabit the prairie, adding a living dimension to the geological scene. Fossils must be left in place rather than collected.
