Bad Wimpfen is a historic spa town in northern Baden-Württemberg, set on a ridge above the Neckar River. Its upper town preserves the remains of a medieval Staufer imperial palace, including the stone Blue Tower and Red Tower, alongside narrow lanes, fortified walls and richly patterned half-timbered houses. The towers and church spires give the town a distinctive silhouette when viewed from the Neckar valley, while within the old center, steep streets reveal layered combinations of timber, painted plaster and sandstone. Below the ridge lies Wimpfen im Tal, the older riverside district, whose principal landmark is the Romanesque-Gothic Collegiate Church of St Peter. Together, the elevated palace quarter and the lower settlement make the town’s geography and long history unusually easy to read in the landscape.
