Ayaz Kala Fortress
📍 Uzbekistan
Located in a secluded area of the Kyzyl Kum desert in Uzbekistan, the Ayaz Kala Fortress is an archaeological site with a fascinating history. Believed to be first built in the 6th century BC, the fortress was used by both the Scythians and Sogdian rulers until the 11th century AD and was an important strategic location for military rulers in the region. Before its decline in the late 10th century, the fortress was said to have been home to thousands of people. Its impressive stone walls stand at an impressive 15 metres high, with four gates and a temple dedicated to the sun god Mouru. Much of what can be seen today are the ruins of administrative buildings, projecting towers and homes for local people. Visitors can still see the remains of fortification with six bastions scattered around the structure. The Fortress also hosts the annual Viloyat Jashn Festival, held each August to celebrate local culture.
