📍 United States
Austin, the only freestanding building designed by American artist Ellsworth Kelly, stands at the Blanton Museum of Art on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Opened in 2018, it translates Kelly’s geometric abstraction into architecture, creating a secular space for contemplation despite its chapel-like form. The white limestone exterior gives way to an interior animated by colored-glass windows arranged in circular and grid-based compositions. Sunlight projects their saturated colors onto pale walls and floors, making the appearance of the space change with the light. Fourteen black-and-white marble panels and a tall redwood totem provide a restrained counterpoint, bringing texture, scale, and sculptural presence to the luminous interior.
