Atomic Bomb Dome
📍 Japan
The Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima, Japan, is the only surviving building near the epicentre of the world's first atomic bomb blast. The building was formerly Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition Hall, but the 1945 atomic bombing left only the former entrance arch and part of the walls standing in the shape of an upside-down U. In 1996, it was officially designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In front of the building stands a memorial cenotaph, dedicated to the hundreds of thousands of people who died as a result of the bombing and the radiation sickness that followed. On the 6th of August, the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, many events are held at the memorial, in remembrance of the victims and to prayer for peace. Visitors to the site can reflect on the horrific consequences of war and contemplate a better future without conflicts.
