📍 From Inside, United Kingdom
The Cathedral Church of Our Lady and St Philip Howard rises above Arundel’s historic centre in West Sussex, close to Arundel Castle and visually paired with it on the town’s skyline. Commissioned by Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk, and completed in 1873 to designs by Joseph Hansom, it is a striking example of French Gothic Revival architecture, with a monumental west front, rose window, pinnacles and steep roofs. It became the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Arundel and Brighton in 1965. Its dedication honours St Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel, an Elizabethan Catholic martyr whose shrine is inside. The long nave, pointed arches and patterned floors create pronounced symmetry, while the annual Carpet of Flowers for Corpus Christi transforms the central aisle with elaborate designs made from blooms and foliage.
