Jacmel is the coastal town at the heart of the Arrondissement de Jacmel in Haiti’s Sud-Est department, sitting on a curved bay backed by low, vegetated hills. Its dense historic center is notable for late-19th–early-20th-century wooden "gingerbread" houses and metal-roofed facades, where ornate wooden fretwork, shuttered windows and wrought-iron balconies create layered textures and repeating patterns along narrow streets. Jacmel is a long-standing hub for visual and carnival arts; papier-mâché mask-making, mural painting and artisan workshops give the town bright, often hand-painted colors and sculptural street elements that read strongly in photographs. The waterfront provides broad bay panoramas framed by palms and fishing boats, while nearby waterfalls and coastal coves in the arrondissement offer forested contrasts to the town’s architecture. Photographers will find compositional opportunities in the contrast of detailed ornament, vibrant local art, and the bay’s calm horizontal line.
