ARoS Aarhus Art Museum stands in central Aarhus, bringing Danish art and international contemporary work into a red-brick building organized around a soaring white atrium and sweeping staircases. Its defining feature is Your rainbow panorama, Olafur Eliasson’s circular rooftop installation, opened in 2011. Visitors walk through a continuous spectrum of colored glass, seeing the city’s rooftops, church spires and harbor shift through different hues. The work makes the surrounding city part of the museum experience: the same skyline changes character as you move around the ring. From outside, the rainbow band contrasts sharply with the building’s solid brick form; inside, the atrium’s pale curves offer a quieter architectural counterpoint. Ron Mueck’s monumental crouching sculpture Boy is another of the museum’s recognizable works, using enlarged human scale to striking effect.
