📍 Uzbekistan
The Ark of Bukhara is the monumental citadel on the western side of the city’s historic center, overlooking Registan Square. For centuries it served as a royal residence and seat of government, including for the emirs who ruled until 1920. Raised above the surrounding streets on a substantial mound, the fortress is recognizable by its massive, sloping walls and elevated entrance, framed by two rounded towers and approached by a long ramp. Behind this defensive exterior, surviving buildings and museum displays reveal a complex that once contained palaces, offices, reception courts and religious spaces. Viewed from the square, the sweeping walls emphasize the citadel’s scale, while the gateway’s stacked openings and curved towers give its main façade a distinctive rhythm.
