Arethusa Spring
📍 Italy
Arethusa Spring is a small freshwater pool set on the eastern edge of Ortigia, the historic island core of Siracusa, where a perennial spring emerges within a paved, balustraded basin beside the sea. The place is layered with local memory: classical myth names the nymph Arethusa who fled to Sicily, and the pool has been a civic landmark through Greek, Roman and later urban phases. Visually it reads as an intimate oasis — dense clumps of tall papyrus punctuate a glossy water surface, producing strong vertical silhouettes and mirror-like reflections against weathered stone and ironwork. Framing is compact; nearby walls, the quay and passing boats give scale and context, while the mix of vegetal green, pale masonry and dark water textures makes for striking close-ups and reflective compositions. Publicly accessible at ground level, the site invites quiet observation rather than wide panoramas.
