Arco da Rua Augusta

Arco da Rua Augusta is a triumphal arch that marks the entrance to the popular downtown Old Town of Lisboa. Located in the Praça do Comércio at the end of Rua Augusta, the arch is an iconic feature of the city, which also happens to be the main gate of the ancient walled city. The 20 meter tall monument was constructed during the 18th century, remodeling an older 1759 arch for the occasion of the reconstruction of the city after the 1755 earthquake. The arch is composed of 6 monumental stone figures, each symbolizing a different historical period that has been important in the history of Lisboa. It also features bronze sculptures of King D. Jose I at the top. The structure is lit beautifully at night, making for wonderful photographs if the lighting is right.
