Arco da Rua Augusta is a monumental arch located in the center of the Portuguese capital city of Lisbon. It was built in neoclassical style, at the initiative of the municipality, in 1875, to commemorate the city’s reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. The arch marks the end of the triumphal avenue dedicated to Queen Maria II and forms one of the most symbolic and photogenic spots in Lisbon. Standing in the middle of the Praça do Comércio square, this triumphal arch has been the backdrop of all important days in the history of the city. Its 17-meter tall structure is filled with ancient sculptures and baroque ornamentations that can be admired by tourists, as it is open to visitors. The views from the top of the arch provide an incredible panoramic experience of all important districts in Lisbon.
