The Cathedral of St John the Baptist stands on Ostrów Tumski, Wrocław’s oldest historic district and traditional ecclesiastical center beside the Oder. Its Gothic core took shape in the 13th and 14th centuries, while later additions include richly decorated Baroque chapels. Severely damaged during the Second World War, the cathedral was reconstructed, restoring a defining landmark of the city’s skyline. The twin western towers and tall spires are its most recognizable features, rising above the district’s church roofs and appearing in views across the river. Closer perspectives reveal the contrast between red brick, pale stone detailing, and sculpted entrances; the surrounding cobbled streets and gas lamps place this monumental church within a distinctly intimate historic setting.
