The Archaeological Park of Herculaneum is located near the modern-day Italian city of Ercolano and is the site of one of the best preserved Roman ruins in the world. It was once a prosperous Roman city and was adjacent to Pompeii, which it was supposed to have outrivaled. Its name comes from the Roman demigod Hercules. During the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, the city and its inhabitants were covered with meters of volcanic ash and mud. This has preserved the city in an extraordinarily intact state allowing us to glimpse the life of pre-Roman Italy. The city was discovered in 1709 and has since been being excavated.
Today, large areas of the city remain unexcavated providing an insight into the complicated layers of civilization which make up this landscape. The site offers a wealth of archaeological wonders to explore, such as an old amphitheatre, palaestra or exercise yard, a thermal spring, the beautiful Casa Del Bel Cortile and a range of other Roman remains. Together, these form part of a compelling landscape of excavated ruins where visitors can get a glimpse of the vanished world of antiquity.
