Árbore do Nadal de Vigo
📍 Spain
Árbore do Nadal de Vigo is the city’s signature contemporary Christmas installation: a towering, sculptural tree made of lights and modular metal elements that replaces the conventional pine in Vigo’s central plaza during the holiday season. Important as a civic symbol of festive identity, it draws locals and visitors with a striking, modern silhouette that reads differently by day (as an architectural framework) and by night (as a dynamic LED spectacle).

Born in the mid-2010s as part of Vigo’s move toward innovative public lighting, the tree reflects the city’s embrace of contemporary design for communal celebrations rather than a strictly traditional display. Its construction uses stacked rings, cubes or ribbon-like modules (depending on the year’s design) to create a vertical cone that allows for complex light choreography: color washes, animated sequences, and synchronized music in evening shows. The Árbore is usually the focal point of the annual lighting ceremony — often accompanied by concerts, community events and occasional fireworks — and is positioned to animate Vigo’s main pedestrian arteries and plazas. A local curiosity: designers change patterns and effects each season, so repeat visitors often find a noticeably different work of light year to year.
