📍 From Ridge, New Zealand
Aoraki / Mount Cook rises 3,724 metres above the Southern Alps, overlooking the glacial Tasman Valley on New Zealand’s South Island. The country’s highest mountain, it is known by a dual Māori and English name; Aoraki is a sacred ancestor in Ngāi Tahu tradition and holds profound cultural significance. From the Tasman River, its snow-and-ice-covered summit appears beyond braided channels, pale gravel flats and the receding Tasman Glacier landscape. These layered foregrounds reveal how glacial meltwater has shaped the valley, while shifting cloud and alpine light can alternately conceal the peak or sharpen its ridges against the sky.
