Aokigahara Nature Trail winds through the forested lava plain at the northwest base of Mount Fuji in Fujikawaguchiko, a compact network of marked paths inside what locals call the Sea of Trees. The forest grows on porous basalt and volcanic debris, creating a dense, low-canopy environment where moss, ferns and gnarled roots cling to rough black rock; the result is a close, textural landscape of deep greens and charcoaled stones. Visual interest comes from low, even light under the canopy, strong horizontal root lines, and pockets where twisted trees frame glimpses of distant sky or Mount Fuji on clear days. Trails are waymarked; visitors should stay on them to protect fragile soils and vegetation.
