📍 Australia
The Anzac Memorial stands at the southern end of Hyde Park in central Sydney and is New South Wales’ principal war memorial. Opened in 1934, it combines architect C. Bruce Dellit’s monumental Art Deco design with sculptures by Rayner Hoff, commemorating service and sacrifice in war. Pink granite, stepped forms and sculpted figures give the exterior a solemn, geometric presence against the park’s trees and surrounding city buildings. Inside, the gold-starred dome of the Hall of Memory rises above a circular opening that looks down into the Hall of Silence, where Hoff’s bronze sculpture Sacrifice forms the emotional centre of the memorial. The Pool of Reflection on the northern side provides a long, symmetrical foreground, allowing the façade and its reflection to be seen together.
