The former Banco de Bilbao building stands on Calle de Alcalá, near Puerta del Sol, among the grand financial buildings of central Madrid. Built for a predecessor of BBVA, it was designed by Ricardo Bastida and completed in the 1920s, when monumental bank architecture expressed commercial power and prestige. Its defining features are two rooftop towers crowned by bronze quadrigas by sculptor Higinio Basterra, each depicting a chariot drawn by four horses. From street level, these dark sculptural groups form distinctive silhouettes against the sky, while the pale stone façade, imposing columns, and curved corners give the building its commanding presence along Alcalá.
