Anrakuji Temple
📍 Japan
Anrakuji is a Pure Land Buddhist temple in Shishigatani, at the foot of Kyoto’s eastern hills near the Philosopher’s Path. It commemorates Anraku and Jūren, disciples of Hōnen who were executed during the 1207 persecution of the Pure Land movement, linking this quiet precinct to a turbulent chapter in Japanese religious history. A thatched gate crowns a flight of stone steps, with maple branches framing the approach. The coarse texture of the roofing, weathered stone and foliage—from fresh spring green to autumn red—give the entrance its distinctive visual character. Unlike temples with routine daily admission, Anrakuji welcomes visitors during designated seasonal openings and special observances, so access to the grounds depends on its opening calendar.
