Angkor Wat
📍 Cambodia
Angkor Wat stands north of Siem Reap within the archaeological landscape of Angkor, the former heart of the Khmer Empire. Built in the early 12th century under King Suryavarman II, it was dedicated to Vishnu before becoming a Buddhist place of worship. Its five lotus-bud towers and tiered galleries evoke Mount Meru, the sacred mountain of Hindu cosmology, while a broad moat separates the complex from the surrounding plain. Sandstone galleries carry intricate bas-reliefs, including the Churning of the Ocean of Milk and scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. From the western approach, the towers form Angkor Wat’s recognizable skyline, often doubled in the reflecting pools; at sunrise, their dark silhouettes stand against the brightening eastern sky. As an active sacred site, it requires visitors to wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
