The Angel of Independence, located in the historic center of Mexico City, is one the most iconic sculptures in the entire country. The monument stands 35m tall from the top of the golden Victory Angel perched high above the column, to the streets below. Designed by architect Antonio Rivas Mercado, and sculpted by Miguel Angel de la Cueva, this structure has been an important part of the history of Mexico for centuries. It was constructed in 1910 to commemorate the centenary of Mexico’s struggle for independence from Spain. It is located at the entrance of the Paseo de la Reforma, the most important avenue in the city. The monument can be seen from anywhere along the boulevard and its majestic presence is truly awe-inspiring.
