American Falls is the broad U.S.-side cascade of Niagara Falls, where the Niagara River drops into the gorge beside the smaller Bridal Veil Falls. Luna Island separates the two, making their distinct curtains of water easy to pick out. A slope of fallen rock at the base gives American Falls a jagged, layered appearance unlike the open plunge of nearby Horseshoe Falls. From Prospect Point in New York, the water fills the foreground; from across the gorge in Canada, its wide crest, rocky base and neighboring Bridal Veil Falls form a fuller view.
