The Alter Elbtunnel (or Old Elbe Tunnel) in Hamburg, Germany is one of the city’s landmarks. Located in the St. Pauli district, the 90-meter tunnel connects the two banks of the river Elbe and was originally built in 1911. Nowadays, it serves as a pedestrian tunnel, featuring river views and impressive architecture. In the middle section, you’ll find a small museum, housing exhibits and information about the tunnel’s history and its significance for Hamburg. Stairs lead down to the bridge and a 24-hour exhibition of light and sound at the tunnel’s southern entrance. The tunnel is also home to a large number of street art and murals, making the area an art-lovers paradise. The south side also offers a breathtaking view of the St. Pauli district.
