The Alter Elbtunnel is a historical combined road and railway tunnel located in Hamburg, Germany. Built between 1911 and 1913, it is one of the oldest operational road tunnels in Germany. It is a public right of way, offering visitors a unique, underground journey into the city’s history, with passageways that were specially built to connect the port of Hamburg to the mainland. The tunnel consists of two combined tube tunnels, full of old machinery, sculptures, and hundreds of meters of cut-away rock faces.

The tunnel is open to the public on most days for a self-guided tour, though guided excursions are available on select dates. Visitors can get an up-close look at the tunnel’s history and architecture, and get a glimpse of the rare breeds of plants that thrive in the wet, iron-rich hideaway. In addition to its historical importance, the tunnel offers a commanding view of the city and surrounding harbors.
