📍 From Inside, Germany
The Alte Pinakothek is a major Old Master museum in Munich’s Kunstareal, the museum quarter north of the historic center. Commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria, designed by Leo von Klenze, and opened in 1836, it reflects the king’s ambition to make art accessible beyond the royal collections. Its holdings trace European painting from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, with works by Dürer, Raphael, Rubens, and Rembrandt; Dürer’s frontal self-portrait of 1500 is among its best-known paintings. The long, Renaissance-inspired brick-and-stone façades give the building a strong horizontal presence, with repeated windows and architectural details creating a measured rhythm. Severe wartime damage became part of its visible history: architect Hans Döllgast’s postwar reconstruction used restrained replacement brickwork rather than concealing every loss, creating a distinctive contrast between surviving ornament and repaired surfaces.
