Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) is one of Italy's most iconic monuments, located in the heart of Rome. The building was originally dedicated to Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy, in 1911. Symbolizing the unified Italy, the altar was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi in 1885.
The Altare della Patria is one of the most distinctive buildings in Rome – the imposing white marble facade combines Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque elements in a unique and unmistakable way. The several statues lining the façade, many depicting military personae, commemorate generals, past kings and victims of war. Inside the monument is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in which the remains of an unknown soldier from WWI were placed, following a proclamation by the Prime Minister of Italy in 1921. Next to the entrance is the Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, inscribed with the words "Vittorio Emanuele II, the father of the fatherland". Every night, a candlelit parade by members of the Italian armed forces takes place in front of the Altare della Patria. Visitors can explore the monument and its grounds, accessing a shop and a museum detailing the history of the establishment. The monument is open to visitors every day.
