The Siq is the narrow sandstone gorge that forms the ceremonial entrance to Petra, near Umm Sayhoun and Wadi Musa in southern Jordan. Extending for about 1.2 kilometres, it follows a natural geological fracture that the Nabataeans transformed with paving, niches, dams and water channels cut into the rock. Its towering walls display rippled layers of red, rose and ochre sandstone, while the confined passage creates dramatic bands of reflected light and deep shadow. The most recognizable view comes at the gorge’s end, where the façade of Al-Khazneh, the Treasury, appears in a slender opening between the cliffs.
