The Oval Plaza is the monumental heart of ancient Jerash, positioned between the Temple of Zeus precinct and the southern end of the Cardo, the city’s main colonnaded street. Its broad paved ellipse, framed by a rhythmic ring of Ionic columns, creates an unusual transition between the differing alignments of the sanctuary and the urban grid. The open space reveals the scale and planning of Roman Gerasa while also gathering several defining views: the Cardo receding northward, the Temple of Zeus rising above, and warm limestone columns casting repeating shadows across the paving. From the edges, the plaza’s curvature is especially clear; from higher ground near the temple, its geometry and relationship to the wider archaeological city become more legible.
