Al-Qurna lies on the Nile’s west bank opposite Luxor, at the edge of the Theban Necropolis. The settlement forms part of the landscape surrounding major ancient sites such as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens and numerous noble tombs, reflecting the west bank’s long association with burial and the setting sun in ancient Egyptian belief. Visually, Qurna is defined by the sharp transition from irrigated fields and village buildings to the pale limestone cliffs of the Theban hills. Mud-brick walls, palms, minarets, and desert ridges create layered views, especially when low light warms the cliffs and emphasizes the contrast between the fertile Nile valley and the archaeological desert.
