The Royal Tombs form a monumental row of Nabataean rock-cut façades on Petra’s eastern cliff, near Umm Sayhoun and overlooking the ancient city’s central valley. Their name reflects their scale and commanding position rather than securely identified occupants. The principal group comprises the Urn, Silk, Corinthian and Palace Tombs, each revealing a different character in the sandstone—from the Silk Tomb’s flowing bands of red, pink and cream to the Palace Tomb’s broad, tiered façade. Their west-facing fronts catch strong afternoon light, while the elevated terraces open views across Petra’s colonnaded core and rugged cliffs. The Urn Tomb also records Petra’s later history, having been adapted as a Byzantine church. The tombs lie within Petra Archaeological Park and are reached on foot by stone steps and uneven paths.
