The Royal Tombs form a monumental row of Nabataean façades carved into Jabal al-Khubtha above central Petra, near the village of Umm Sayhoun. Their collective name reflects their imposing scale, although the people buried here have not been securely identified. The group includes the Urn, Silk, Corinthian, and Palace Tombs, each distinguished by different combinations of classical ornament, rock-cut chambers, and weathered sandstone. The Silk Tomb is especially recognizable for its flowing bands of red, rose, cream, and gray stone, while the Palace Tomb resembles a multi-storey architectural façade. Facing west across Petra’s valley, the tombs gain depth and warmer color in later light; from the opposite side, their repeated portals and immense scale stand out against the rugged cliff.
