Machu Picchu, located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, is an iconic archaeological site known for its distinctive architecture. Built in the 15th century, this ancient citadel was built among the three intersecting mountain peaks of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu and Putucusi. It is thought to have been built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti. This well preserved site consisting of around 200 buildings was never discovered by the Spanish and was only rediscovered in 1911.
