The Great Temple is a monumental Nabataean complex on the south side of Petra’s colonnaded main street, within the ancient city near Wadi Musa. Unlike Petra’s famous rock-cut façades, it was constructed as a freestanding ensemble of broad stairways, terraced courts and colonnades, revealing the scale of the city’s public architecture. Its upper level contains a small theater, while elephant-headed capitals recovered from the lower precinct show the varied decorative influences embraced by Nabataean builders. Rows of re-erected columns create strong visual rhythms against the rugged sandstone slopes; views along the stepped approach make the relationship between the formal architecture and Petra’s mountainous setting especially clear.
