Alcázar de Colón
📍 Dominican Republic
The Alcázar de Colón is the early 16th-century palace of Diego Colón in Santo Domingo’s Ciudad Colonial, sitting beside the Plaza de España and overlooking the Ozama River. As one of the oldest preserved Spanish colonial residences in the Americas, its two-story stone mass, crenellated roofline and inner courtyards connect European palace form with Caribbean light and vegetation. Visually notable are the symmetrical façade and arcade that frame the plaza, the contrast of pale masonry against tropical palms, and the carved wooden ceilings and wrought-iron details visible through windows and doors. The building functions as a museum, so photographs that include the river, the plaza’s cobbles and the palace’s mirrored arcade capture both urban scale and historical layering of the colonial core.
