Alcatraz Island is a U.S. National Historic Landmark, located 1.5 miles offshore of San Francisco, California. It's been a fortification, a prison, the site of a major occupation by Native Americans, and a recreation area just to name a few of its long list of uses over the years. Nowadays, it's one of America's top tourist destinations. It's housed infamous inmates such as Al Capone and Robert Stroud (the Birdman of Alcatraz), and offers quite a range of sightseeing and educational tours. On tours, visitors can expect to explore the famous prison cells, lighthouse, and morgue, in addition to learning about the unique history of the island's previous military fort, Native American occupation and colorful tales of gangsters and criminals. Visitors also get amazing view of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline. Alcatraz Island is definitely a must-see if you're visiting the San Francisco area.
